Bidens Pilosa: What the Research Actually Shows

Bio-retinol is one of those terms that shows up everywhere and gets defined nowhere. So before anything else, here's what romerillo actually is, what's been studied, and where the evidence stops.

What romerillo actually is

Romerillo is the common name for Bidens pilosa, a plant that grows wild across Puerto Rico and much of the Caribbean and Latin America, roadsides, empty lots, places nobody planted it on purpose. It contains phytol, a compound that, once metabolized in the skin, converts to phytanic acid.

Phytanic acid has an affinity for the same nuclear receptors retinol activates, primarily RXR, with some effect on RAR as well. That's the mechanism researchers point to when they call an ingredient like this a "retinol alternative": not the same molecule, not the same chemical family, but reaching a similar destination through a different door.

What the research actually found

A 2015 study tested a standardized Bidens pilosa extract on human dermal fibroblasts and real human skin fragments in a laboratory setting. The extract's effects on collagen-supporting extracellular matrix components, on epidermal and fibroblast growth factors, and on retinoid receptor activation were comparable to, and in some measures better than, retinol and retinoic acid tested directly on the same tissue.

Worth being precise about: this was laboratory research on human skin tissue, not a clinical trial on living people. We're not going to call it something it isn't, even though "clinical" would sound more impressive. It's real science, at the tissue level, and that's exactly what we're telling you it is.

A separate phytochemical analysis found Bidens pilosa extract meaningfully inhibits hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid in skin, which supports the case for its role in skin hydration and structure over time.

What Selfnamed's own testing adds
