I wasn't looking for skincare.
I was looking for ten minutes.
I am Vero. What I wanted was a small piece of the night that belonged to me. The same thing, in the same order, behind a closed door. Not another routine to keep up with. Something closer to a ritual.
I tried retinol first, and it worked. Almost too well, close to an overnight lift, and I remember thinking that was a lot happening to my face very quickly. Then I stopped, and my face felt droopier than when I started. My skin had most likely just gone back to where it began. But you don't compare your face to how it looked before. You compare it to how it looked on retinol. Those results were rented.
So I looked for plant-based brands instead. I found good ones. What I could not find was a reliable one. Orders that came late. A product I had built my nights around, discontinued without warning, because the brand was small and could not keep it going.
That is when it got clear for me. You cannot build a ritual on something that might not be there. A ritual only works if it repeats. Take the repetition away and it was just a nice night you had once.
I also wanted it to be plants, and not only because plants are gentler. I come from a place where these plants were medicine long before anyone put them in a bottle. Building this with anything else would have felt like borrowing someone else's answer to my own question.
So I built it. Four steps, not nine. Two plant actives instead of the strongest molecule on the shelf. Ingredient lists short enough to read all the way through. And a supply chain steady enough that when you reach for it in three months, it is still here.
The four bottles are not the point. They are what makes the ten minutes repeat. That is the point.
Two plants.
One ritual.
Not one active repeated twice. Two different molecules, two different mechanisms, layered ten minutes apart. One does its work in the Sérum. The other seals it in the Qrema.
Pronounced bah-KOO-chee-ol. It comes from the seeds of the babchi plant, used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine long before the skincare industry noticed it.
It is not a retinoid and shares no chemical structure with vitamin A. Gene expression studies show it guides skin cell behavior along pathways similar to retinol, increasing collagen production and suppressing MMP, the enzyme that breaks collagen down.
It is photostable, which means it does not make your skin more sensitive to sun.
It grows on roadsides and in fields across Puerto Rico, where it is called romerillo, or margarita silvestre. Nobody plants it. Most people pull it.
It contains phytanic acid, which reaches the same receptor sites retinol activates. Different key, same lock. It is used in the plant-retinol lines at bareMinerals, Goop Beauty and Juice Beauty.
It has been noted as suitable for melanin-rich, sensitive and post-inflammatory skin.
The active in the night cream is a plant from home that nobody thought was worth anything.
Retinol works.
Just not for everyone.
You have heard of it. Maybe you have tried it. Maybe your skin pushed back, and somewhere in there you quietly decided the problem was you.
It wasn't. That's not a discipline failure. That's chemistry.
Retinol is a strong molecule, and some skin does not tolerate it no matter how carefully it is introduced. So we went looking for a different way to reach the same place, and we found it in plants that reach the same receptors by a different route.

and the door is closed.
